Nepal is one of the best places in the world to try trekking for the first time — as long as you choose the right trail and prepare properly.
Choose a route that matches your fitness
Shorter, lower-altitude routes like the Poon Hill Trek or Ghorepani-Ghandruk loop are ideal for beginners, while longer treks like Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit require more stamina and time to acclimatize.
Pack in layers
Himalayan weather changes quickly. Bring a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid layer, and a waterproof outer shell, along with sturdy, broken-in hiking boots.
Take altitude seriously
Above 3,000 metres, ascend gradually and build rest days into your itinerary. Drink plenty of water and listen to your guide if symptoms of altitude sickness appear.
Trek with a licensed guide
A local guide doesn't just navigate the trail — they add cultural context, arrange accommodation, and are essential for your safety in remote areas.
